History of Gatorade
1965. The University of Florida. Dewayne Douglas, the assistant coach of the college's freshman American Football squad - The Florida Gators - approaches his friends in the Medical faculty with a problem - His players are so affected by the Florida heat that they are unable to perform at their best. Dr Robert Cade and his team agree to help the team by visiting the players during training.
THE DISCOVERY
The scientists discover that the electrolytes and fluids which the players are losing in sweat are not being replaced adequately, while the carbs they were burning weren’t being replenished either.
SCIENTIFIC DEVELOPMENT
The scientists develop a carbohydrate-electrolyte drink designed precisely to replace the key elements lost by the players during training and competition. After the addition of lots of Florida citrus fruits to improve the flavour, a formula is eventually developed that the players can drink easily and use during training and competition. After seeing the performance improvement it delivers for the freshman ‘Baby Gators’, the coach of the varsity team ask for the concoction to be provided for his team. The drink is christened ‘Gator-ade’
1967 - Florida Gators win the Orange Bowl
The Florida Gators varsity team, led by legendary coach Ray Graves and fueled by Gatorade, win the coveted Orange Bowl for the first time in their history, beating the favoured Georgia Tech. In the game Gators running back Larry Smith has a 94-yard touchdown run setting an Orange Bowl record. After the game, Georgia’s coach Bobby Dodd tells Graves, “We didn’t have Gatorade – that made the difference”
1971 - Gatorade and the NFL
Gatorade becomes the official sports drink of the American National Football League (NFL) - A title it still holds to this day.
From college games to the Superbowl, the Gatorade dunk quickly becomes a tradition which sees the winning team pour a cooler of Gatorade over their coach.
1985 - The Gatorade Sports Science Institute is founded
The GSSI is founded in Barrington, Illinois, with the aim of sharing knowledge on sports nutrition and exercise science to enhance the performance and well-being of athletes. Today the GSSI continues to work with the best athletes around the world.
1991 - 'Be like Mike'
Michael Jordan signs for Gatorade and helps to introduce it to a new generation of athletes.
2008- Gatorade comes to the UK
The world’s biggest sports drink brand finally arrives in the UK, bringing over 40 years of sporting history and global expertise to British athletes.
2010- G Series Pro is launched
Gatorade evolves with the G Series Pro - consisting of Prime, Perform and Recover to ensure that athletes are fuelled before, during, and after the game.
